Murray Park Friends

" green space for all "

About Us
In the Autumn of 2008,  a number of local residence got together and  established a group with the primary aim of developing the Murray Road (Ipswich) recreational ground. The park is located in a deprived area with limited sporting facilities and suffers from a degree of anti sociable behaviour. With this in mind, we feel it's an important facility to maintain and improve, to give the young  (and the older)community a constructive way to spend time. Due to the continuing shortage of funding within the local government, solely relying on them for funding is prohibitive and so we formed the group. The local council are acting as a supporting mechanism for the group and providing assistance where possible.

 Why the group was formed.

The park had a set of four tennis court and one basketball court. Unfortunately these where built onto a set of air raid shelters.  For some unknown reason, over the last few years, parts of the ground around these shelters have sunk, causing the playing surface to be very uneven and unusable, so they were closed to the public, with no real plans to develop and reopen.  This caused an eyesore for the area and generally a reduction in the respect for the area.

What does the group actually do ?

We meet up regularly to discuss ideas and talk through proposals and set tasks for the forthcoming months.  This includes research and communicating with other people and organisations. Most of the work will revolve around preparing for grant applications

How will the work be funded ?

There are a number of funding organisations, some are financed indirectly by Government and others via the private sector and charitable organisation. To tap into these funding streams, an application process needs to be completed. The work to complete these applications is completed by the group, with the assistance of Ipswich Borough Council.
